Buck from Rubber on Road

Though in most situations when you set out on a trip you may have a final destination in mind, for me the best part of traveling has always been all the points between A and B, with the start and finish points just being unavoidable evils. I love traveling long distance and my favorite modes of travel are easily either hiking (by foot) or by motorcycle. I have felt for a long time that both of these offer a unique opportunity to be immersed in your surroundings and appreciate them in a way that you would otherwise miss on any other form of transportation.

I have been writing about my experiences on motorcycles on Rubber on Road since 2008, about a year after I started riding (but have been long distance hiking since I was 13). The trips have yet to get old and I’m always finding myself looking forward to the next one I’m able to dream up. Some of my favorites have been:

  1. A 2005 thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail

Read about the trip from my daily Trail Journals Blog.

  2. My first ever motorcycle trip in 2007

From NY to Florida with my Dad

  3. Round Trip from Toronto to San Diego in 2008

  4. 2 Month Hike and Bike Around the U.S. in 2010

8,600 miles circumnavigating the country by motorcycle and 500+ miles of hiking from Oregon to Canada.

  5. A Chinese Road Trip: Beijing-Yantai-Qingdao-Beijing

1,700km on a somewhat rickety Chinese motorcycle down the East Coast of China

Living in Beijing, China now, commuting mostly by motorcycle and going out for rides when I can has been a whole new adventure compared to riding back home in the U.S. Whether it’s been dealing with repairs, dodging traffic where road rules are a mere suggestion, meeting curious locals on the road, or taking a dip in a lake next to the Great Wall, it seems there’s always an adventure to enjoy!

If you would like to contact me, whether you’d like to ask about some of my previous experiences, have questions about motorcycling in China, or just want to share some of your own stories, please feel free to email me at buck.perley [@] rubberonroad[.com].
